The “Hijab” Ceiling in Politics
Feminist, socialist, devout Muslim: woman who has thrown Denmark into turmoil
Via Idlan:
The Danish People’s Party or DFP, the far-right movement that unofficially props up the weak centre-right government of the prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, is on the warpath. A couple of DFP politicians compared the headscarf to the Nazi swastika. One described the prospective MP as “brainwashed”.
This is another example of how a woman’s right to choose how she wishes to live her life is constantly hijacked by others. By Muslims who choose to use a woman’s headscarf as a symbol of their power over her, by non-Muslims who choose to use a woman’s headscarf as a symbol of their fear of the acts of violent men, by the ignorant masses who assume that they know all the reasons why a free Muslim woman would choose to don the garment.
All over the world, there are people telling women to wear it or else, there are people telling women to take it off or else, and there are people debating its merits, most of whom have never experienced life from the eyes of the woman who chose that path.
For those who are terrified of the likes of Asmaa Abdol-Hamid, pick on someone your own “size”. Redirect your anger, and your paranoia, to those who deserve it.
The same goes to the Malaysian Male MPs who can’t say anything smart, and therefore constantly hits below the belt. Literally.
On a side note, I wonder if this fine for employers who ignore sexual harassment claims is applicable for members of parliament.
